Winter Exercise: Guide to Moving in the Cold…
As someone living in Canada, I am certainly aware of the challenges associated with winter exercise… For some, the cold can make breathing more of a challenge (I, myself, experience cold-induced asthma). For many, the weather will prevent us from doing our normal exercise routine (too icy to walk, not possible to bike, etc). However – there are many other ways to move… The key is to experiment and find what works best for you…
Try Something New Outdoors
Each change in season comes with new opportunities to try activities that you may not get to do at other times of the year. Perhaps try a new outdoor activity that is unique to the winter months. Some examples may include…
- Skating
- Cross Country Skiing
- Snow Shoeing (great for those who love going for walks)
- Sledding (an awesome activity to do with your kids/grandkids)
- Walking around a winter festival (ice sculpture festival, holiday festival, or window shopping for holiday gifts)
Try a Local Gym Class
If the cold is not your friend, moving indoors can be a great alternative! Browse local gyms to see if there are classes that you may be interested in. Not only is this a great way to move your body – it can also be a fun social atmosphere and a way to meet new people. Some class types may include…
- Yoga or pilates
- Aquafit or swim classes
- Total body workouts
- Spin classes
- Indoor recreational sports
Experiment with Online Movement “Challenges” & Videos
If time is limited or you prefer to workout in your own space, online movement challenges & videos can be a great way to do your winter exercise. Some of my personal favourite YouTube channels (of varying intensities) include… (Pro Tip: When searching these names or looking for other videos be sure to add the term “beginner”, “intermediate”, or “advanced” depending on your fitness level).
Video Call a Friend
One of my favorite ways to get moving is with a friend. In the winter, walks with friends aren’t always possible (and/or may not be enjoyable). In the winter, I typically schedule a yoga video call with a friend or with my mom. We set a date and a time, we choose a video, and we do the workout together while catching up and chatting about our week. This is a great way to connect, hold each other accountable, and try new movement videos together.
Play With Kids/Grandkids
Finally, a great way to get moving in the winter is to play with your kids or grandkids. Whether you’re playing with them at home, tossing a ball outside, or taking them to go sledding – playing with kids is typically an active-task. Of course, while getting your movement in, you’ll be spending quality time with your loved ones – making for a great all-around wellness activity.
Remember: The Small Things Add Up!
Remember that each small activity or form of movement you do can add up to help you become a healthier, happier, and more mobile YOU. Try incorporating daily movement such as: parking farther from the store; taking the stairs; getting up once per hour to move your body; or doing some stretches while watching tv. These small activities can make a big difference in the long run.
